| The Gray
Hackle Yellow is a fly that I have known from my earliest days on the
stream. It was popular when I was a youth, and its beauty still
rates at the top of the list of dry flies. |

Recipe |
Hook:
Mustad 94831 2X long dry fly hook or 94840 #16 Thread: yellow floss Tail: Red Rooster Hackle barbs Body: Yellow floss Ribbing: Sometimes golden mylar Hackle: Grizzly |

Tie in yellow floss and wind back to hook bend. |

Tie in hackle barbs from red rooster spade hackle. |

Wind floss to form shape of the body full length of the hook. Leave thread behind hook eye. |

Take strand of grizzly hackle, trim 1/4 of bottom section and tie in as shown in the picture behind the hook eye. |

Wind hackle 5 to 6 turns backwards to the end of the thorax. Now wind thread back through the hackle and bring back to the hook eye. Trim excess hackle, tie off and cement the head. |

Finished fly. Congratulations, you now have one of the most beautiful and effective dry flies to ever be developed in East Tennessee.
